Abandoned houses are seen in So Lo Pun, Hong Kong, on April 23, 2023. So Lo Pun is a 300 year old abandoned rural village located near the border with mainland China. It has long been called a “haunted” village, as there were rumours saying compasses do not work inside the village and some villagers disappeared overnight. There used to be around 300 villagers in the 1950s but they gradually moved out to towns or immigrated to the U.K. The village was completely deserted in the 1980s. In 2007, an former resident returned to HK from the U.K. and wanted to restore the village. 16 years have passed, and it seems that there is still a long way to go.

Hong Kong’s hottest summer fell hardest on most vulnerable
As Earth sweltered to its hottest Northern Hemisphere summer ever recorded, Hong Kong shared in the misery. The city, already known for oppressive humidity, endured its own record-breaking summer for heat, including August’s monthly mean temperature of 29.7 degrees Celsius. Residents spent half the month under very hot weather warnings. This sweltering summer won’t soon be forgotten, and for many residents there is worry about future heat waves. As in so many other places, the burden of this summer’s heat fell hardest on Hong Kong’s most vulnerable, who don’t have or can’t afford air conditioning to cope with the heat.

“I Laughed, in Order Not to Cry” This photo essay explores the journeys of Ukrainian women who, amid the ongoing conflict with Russia, have left their hometowns in search of better opportunities for their families. Restricted from leaving the country, these women embody resilience and determination, showcasing their unwavering love for Ukraine despite their hardships. Their stories highlight the strength that emerges in times of adversity. With humor as a form of resistance, they echo the sentiments of their ancestors, using laughter to cope with pain and challenge. As Lesia Ukrainka wrote, “I laughed, in order not to cry” reflects their ability to find moments of joy while confronting sorrow. While some women long for their homeland, others choose not to return, yet all share a profound belief that Ukraine remains their true home. They emphasize the importance of pursuing fulfilling lives, balancing hope with the reality of their circumstances, and affirming that even in war, their spirit endures.
